Kayaking Class For Novice Paddlers

This class is for kayakers with some experience who have their own boat, paddle, spray skirt, life jacket and helmet. If you have recently started kayaking and want become more skilled in the sport then this is the class for you.

Registration is required. Class starts at 3:00 pm and will last 3-4 hours.

1 July: Meet at the takeout (Pennyfield Lock), after which we will shuttle to Riley’s Lock as the put-in (minimum water level of 3.5ft on the Little Falls gauge). We will start with wet exits then practice forward and sweep strokes as we cross the Potomac. We then then go down the George Washington channel and practice ferrying, eddy hopping, and peel outs (including C turns and S turns), and stern draws. We will take the left channel, cross the Potomac, and end at Pennyfield.

2 July: Meet at the takeout (Lock 10), after which we will shuttle to the Anglers Inn put-in. We will practice strokes, eddying, and peeling out.

All participants must fill out the ACA Waiver and Insurance form.

Signed ACA waivers will be collected at the start of the class.
ACA Minor Waver and Insurance

To save time, please bring the completed ACA form with you to the class.

If you have a problem with the registration system, or have questions about the registration system, please contact the Webmaster.

If you are new to the Potomac, you will find that most of our paddling access points are on the Maryland side of the river.  This is thanks to the C&O Canal National Park which runs for 184 miles along the Potomac from Georgetown in Washington, DC, to Cumberland, Maryland.
The C&O Canal Association has a list of all the access points with descriptions, coordinates and Google map links.
