15 participants turn out for the inaugural trip of the Sunday paddlers 2021 season. Due to the large size we divided into two groups:
· River runners – Hendrick vO, Jean O’S, Mike K, Mikey B, Pam W & Wayne McD. Trouble-free run. The center chute in the blockage below Jacuzzi rapid is now completely clear of debris and a clean drop. We observed 2 bald eagles, one great blue heron and 46 turtles.
· Eddy hoppers - Alf C, Barb B, Chris K (PFD), Gordy L, Jackie H, Lisa W, Shae M (in new hard boat), Tom P & daughter Evelyn & Toni B. No upsets but there was some impromptu safety training. In their extended peregrinations, the hoppers were shown a massive eagle nest located up one of the bayous stretching up toward Dam No 2. It is a truly massive structure - the size of a very large dog. Claimed turtle sightings were 67 (there’s some double-counting going on here).
Both groups enjoyed spectacular spring weather – blue skies, a light breeze, and a high around 80. We also enjoyed the water level in the C&O canal during the return trip – appeared to be about 6” inches deeper than it was over the winter. Thank you C&0 NHP!
