Sunday Paddle - Violettes Lock-GW Canal Loop

The summer doldrums continue and with no significant rainfall, our options are severely limited. Therefore, we will again paddle the Class II George Washington Canal. We will meet at 9:00 a.m. in the Violettes Lock parking lot (13948 Vilolettes Lock Rd.). We will then cross the Potomac to run the canal and then return to Vilolettes Lock via either the C&O canal or, for the hardy, an attainment up Seneca Breaks. As always, please let the trip coordinator, Tim Tilson, know if you will be joining. You can contact Tim via email at hmslydia@msn.com or 703-273-9436 (home land line) or 703-864-0802 cell ONLY after 0800 Sunday morning.

The weather forecast is typical late summer – partly sunny with a high in the mid low 80s. There is a 3% chance of rain and a winds of 5 mph. The forecast river level is 2.7’ (2,000 cfs) on the Little Falls gauge, a low level for this section of river.

PFDs are required for all. Helmets are required for kayakers using spray skirts and highly recommended for all others. Airbags are strongly encouraged for boats without other means of flotation. If you need safety equipment, please advise the trip coordinator in advance.
