Sunday Paddle - Dealers Choice
About this event
Well guys, I gotta tell ya. There still ain’t a lot of options for us right now. We have obviously upset the rain gods over the last couple of weeks, for we have received no gifts (in the form of rain). With the current water levels, predicted to be 2.7” and a discharge of 1,480 CFS, it looks like the GW seems to be the only real option in play right now. So, I think we’ll go with the GW canal for Sunday’s run via the Violette’s Lock Loop.
I think you all know the run, but for the first timers out there, this is a beautiful 3.6-mile Class I/II run starting and ending at Violette’s Lock. We’ll meet at Violette’s Lock at 10:00 AM with a departure target of 10:30 AM. It should be a nice day with a high of 67F.
Please note that the Potomac Take out at Blockhouse point is somewhat challenging due to a steep step up from the river and conditions that get more slippery as it gets more wet. Let me know by noon Saturday if this a blocker for you and we can discuss the possibility of organizing a parallel run to go from Riley’s Lock to Pennyfield Lock, which does require a shuttle, but may be easier for those with limited mobility.
Now a couple of notes on safety. If this is your first time down this section of river, please reach out to me so we can discuss it. Also, please be aware that the water temperatures are now in the low 60s and dropping. So please remember to dress appropriately based on the possibility of a swim. PFDs are required for all. Helmets are required for kayakers using spray skirts and highly recommended for all others. Airbags are strongly encouraged for boats without other means of flotation. If you need safety equipment, please advise the trip coordinator.
Please send me a note at dean@haweslink.net if you plan to participate.
Hope to see you out there
