ASCI Whitewater Park Closes
The Adventure Sports Center International (ASCI) whitewater park in Garrett County, MD, has ceased operating. The center, which featured artificial rapids up to Class IV, was operated by Wisp Resort on property owned by the county. Wisp announced in March that it was closing the center.
In a posting on Facebook, the resort said that it "has had the privilege of operating [the whitewater course] for the past decade, following the 2014 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships. During this time, it has been an honor to help steward and activate a truly world-class facility for guests, boaters, and the broader outdoor community."
Kim Durst, business development manager in Garrett County's Department of Community Development, told the Cruiser that the property will be put up for auction with an asking price of $2 million. The county is imposing no requirement that the property be used for a whitewater park. Although a developer could choose to do so, other uses—such as development for housing—would be possible.
