Upper Antietam - 3.92'/813 cfs, Sunday April 7...
Author Last Post

We had a largish group of paddlers happy to catch upper Antietam with lots of water on a picture perfect day. Paddling K-1s were Lisa L., Jack F. (PFD), Chris O., Barb B., Ron R. (PFD), Marilyn J. (PFD), Lisa F. (PFD and new boat) and paddling OC-1s were Rich C., Robin W., Hendrik vO. and the two Quams. Antietam Creek near Sharpsburg gage was 3.92 ft., 813 cfs when we put on. The water was on the chilly side, but the weather was ideal, mostly sunny, mid 50s and climbing into the 60s with little wind. We met at the take out and with Ron’s super shuttle truck carrying 7 boats and 5 people, we were able to get 12 boats and 12 paddlers to the put-in in 3 vehicles. There is a semi permanent strainer that blocks the left side of the right span and the right side of the left span of the bridge at the put-in. Some of us chose to put in above the rapid and run the left side, while others put in a little lower, right above the bridge on river right and snuck through the right span. The first ledge was slightly washed out at this level, but had a surfing wave able to hold multiple boats at once. The second ledge was bigger with a nice drop. The last rapid, left of the island, was enjoyed by all as well as a few good surfing spots along the way. Hard to find lunch spot for big group, but we did, river right. We were on the water about 3 hours.
