Since I'm a new CCA member, Gary helped me post a planned trip to the New
River Gorge. It was my first trip on the New, and fortunately, Stin and Virginia
joined me for safety and camaraderie. The first day was a short 5 miles. While
the National Park Service guidebook identified two class III rapids on the run, I
ran drop after drop of class IIs. I must say, these were the largest class II’s I’ve
ever seen, closer to Class IIIs in my book. Gorgeous run. Stin joined me for day
2, and it was a delight to accompany someone who's done this river before. The
rapids seemed smaller and easier on this day. On Day 3, Stin and I were joined
by Virginia, with more Class IIs and a class III near the end called “Surprise”.
Stin remembered running Surprise on an earlier trip, but we spotted the hole and
easily maneuvered around it. All in all, an excellent introduction to the CCA and
the New River. And a shout-out to Stin and Virginia for making it a great trip and
Adina for the exceptional shuttle and guide services.
