11 paddlers – Beth K, Bruce C (PFD), Dana V, David C, Dmitri D, Doug, Gary S, Gary & Ginny Q, Toni B & Wayne McD – enjoyed another beautiful spring day on Lower Antietam Creek. In a reversal of customary conditions, the Sharpsburg gauge clocked in at higher than projected – 3.5’ vs the 3.2’ forecast. This made for a quick trip down the creek as the current pushed us along and a bouncy Furnace Rapid at the end. Furnace Rapid extended only as far as the Harper Ferry Rd bridge as the section below the bridge was submerged in backwash from the high-running Potomac River (Point of Rocks gauge = 33,000 cfs). No carnage to report. Without doubt, the most difficult part of the trip was the scramble up the muddy bank at the HFR bridge takeout. There were numerous waterfowl sightings – geese and several species of ducks.
