Bloomington Release, BRV-CCA

About this event

I will lead a joint BRV-CCA trip on Saturday, August 27: please rendezvous at the takeout (the water treatment facility parking area) at 11-AM. Bring a lunch and $2 cash for the put-in fee.

I will be spending Friday and Saturday nights at the Keyser Inn in Keyser, WV, so as to spare myself the 3-hr+ drive up on Saturday morning. I may be willing to do a second run on Sunday morning, or perhaps try the river downstream of Westernport. I do not have a cell phone or a laptop, and thus I need paddlers wishing to join the trip to contact me prior to my commencing my drive up there mid-afternoon Friday August 26 (see contact particulars below).

For any first timers, this is a classic "big" class-II, Intermediate, run: most of the rapids are steep cobble bar (plus some boulders) rapids--they seem to be pushy but pretty much everything is padded and there are eddies and generally smooth runouts. The hardest rapid is called Robin's Nest, a quasi-blind ledge rapid that has an easy class-II sneak on the far left, but the classic line a bit farther to the right rates a low-III at the 1,000 cfs release level. It can be scouted. The main issue with Robin's Nest is that its runout is long, fast, somewhat shallow, and full of rocks--so a swim could be unpleasant. Also (a general precaution) the water comes from deep in a reservoir and so is cold; please dress appropriately. The run overall is often touted as being similar in difficulty to the Lehigh, but the character is very different. Paddlers comfortable on the Staircase should have no problem, but it would be a significant step up in difficulty for paddlers who have focussed on novice runs on the Potomac like Violets Lock, the Needles, and Anglers Inn to Lock 10.

Hendrik van Oss
hvanoss.cement@gmail.com
703-715-8381 (= landline; I have no cell phone)
