Thursday Paddle - Needles, River Riders to HFAC, 4...

This was an alternate Thursday paddle to doing Little Falls at 3.3’. It turned out to be throwback Thursday, as we had all open boaters. Gary and Ginny Q. coordinated and welcomed Chris K., Hendrik vO. and Mark W. Shepherdstown gage 2.91 ft., 3080 cfs. POR gage at 1:30 pm, 1.92 ft., 4170 cfs. Water temp: 69. Weather: partly sunny, 82-90°, wind SSW 6-9 mph. It was a very pleasant day. The cooler water temp kept the air temp comfortable. We have learned that an east, southeast wind makes for a very strong headwind from at least the confluence down, no matter what the wind speed is, but this breeze was delightful. The water above the dam at the put in was glassy calm and we had a light tailwind after the confluence. We met in the upper lot at Harpers Ferry Adventure Center and paid $10 to leave one car at the bottom. This was a great level with lots of opportunities to practice eddy turns, ferrying and surfing. Whitehorse was in good form with its usual chaotic waves.
