Trip Reports

Thursday Paddle - Needles, River Riders to HFAC, 4...

Trip Report from Tim Tilson:

It was another beautiful run on the Needles today. This was the third consecutive week of a Needles trip and was reported to be the best for weather. Sunny warm day, virtually no wind (as opposed to other days), and a great crew. In OC1s, we had Hendrik van O, Gary and Ginny Q, and your faithful Trip Coordinator. In K1 we had Alf C, Lisa L, and Wayne M. Down from Pasadena Md way we had Tony A. And just in from the windy city (aka Chicago) we had Diana Kittelton, a class V paddler friend of Lisa. The level was 3.5 on the Hancock gauge. No carnage to report. Lots of surfing from the usual suspects at the usual places. We took out at HFAC and best of all they didn’t charge us. Please don’t tell anyone else. I think Ginny Q using her feminine charms on the fellow.

From Alf: Ever interested in the actual discharges on our trips, I ran the numbers on the three relevant gages. USGS Shepherdstown, 3 hours upstream on the Potomac - 2,260 cfs for the Needles. Millville gage on the Shenandoah = 935 cfs +2,260 = 3,195 cfs in Whitehorse.  Checking Point of Rocks , 12 miles below the 340 bridge, I get 3,460 with a 4-hour lag. So pretty much on the money.
