HAZARD ALERT: North Branch Potomac, Westernport to...

Quick update on the subject section based on a family trip yesterday: The first rapid immediately below the Westernport put-in across from the Subway has two of the three channels blocked by log strainers that probably will not flush out unless the flow gets much higher than the standard 1000cfs release that we used. The left-most channel (which I bypassed before seeing that the other two were blocked) might be safely run, but it looked like it ran very close to the shore with possible overhanging vegetation issues. It also could have unseen hazards out of sight around the corner.

I suggest until a full reconnaissance can be made of this rapid that the old access at the sewage treatment plant be used, which is at the end of this rapid. This access involves carrying down across a short floodwall, but it looked do-able with two people guiding boats across and down to the river. Also, better parking here at the town park across from the treatment plant.

The remainder of the run had no hazards and was as described in previous reports. As an alternative to stopping for lunch at the intermediate McCool access, we used a small sandy beach on river left across from the first prominent limestone cliff immediately below Keyser.
