Wilderness First Aid for Paddlers
About this event
This two-day Wilderness First Aid course for paddlers focuses on the basic skills of Response and Assessment, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Environmental Emergencies, Survival Skills, Soft Tissue Injuries, and Medical Emergencies. We also discuss stabilization and treatment for backcountry injuries in depth.
In collaboration with Campaign Pay It Forward, this Wilderness First Aid course is geared toward whitewater paddlers and taught by Charlie Duffy, a Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician (WEMT) certified instructor and long-time paddler. The course covers common paddling injuries and how to treat them until advanced medical personnel arrive.
This course is perfect for trip leaders who want basic first-aid training for short trips with family, friends, and outdoor groups.
Accidents happen. People get hurt, sick, or lost. The temperature drops, the wind picks up, and it rains. Would you know what to do? Many backcountry emergencies are preventable; even when bad things happen, sometimes the wrong care can worsen things. By learning a few basic skills, you can distinguish between a good and bad outcome and maybe even save a life. We immerse participants through lectures and hands-on scenarios.
