Westernport to Black Oak (Gary Yoder): Sunday, May 25:
Weather forecast is for mostly cloudy, with a high of 69-degrees.
This is a pleasant trip of slightly more than 10 miles. The put-in is at Westernport (opposite the Subway restaurant (may be closed??). The upper half of the run is characterized by bouncy class-II rapids (mostly cobble-bar) with one ledge that is II+; the rapids are similar in feel to those on the Bloomington section but are shorter and with less gradient. Below the 220 bridge the run is mostly flatwater, with a few class II rapids, but is notable for great geologic exposures where the river cuts sundry ridges; especially notable is that on river right at the final class II rapid, which is not far upstream of the river-left boat ramp takeout at Black Oak.
If the dam release commences at the usual starting time (10 AM), it takes the water 1.5--2 hrs to reach Westernport; but if they release all Saturday night, then the river will be watered earlier. I would propose meeting at the Subway parking lot in Westernport c. 11 AM, to drop boats (limited car access, so just a couple of cars at a time) and then set shuttle. I plan on staying at the Keyser Inn on Friday and Saturday night. Folks wishing to run these trips should contact me ASAP (see below) and before Friday Noon. Thereafter, a message can be left for me at the Keyser Inn. Note: my phone is my household land line; I do not have a cell phone, nor will I have a lap-top.
