George Washington Canal

About this event

The Potomac continues to be the only game in town, as is typical in August, so we will return to the George Washington Canal on Sunday. The predicted Little Falls gage is 3.1', a good level for this river section. The morning weather forecast is a high in the mid-80s, with 0% chance of rain.

The primary trip will meet at the Violette’s Lock parking lot at 9:00 and run the loop using the C&O Canal for the return. However, I’ve been hearing increasing concern about climbing the steep embankment at Blockhouse Point to access the C&O - this slope is getting steeper or we’re getting older or both. (News bulletin: CCA has met with NPS about the possibility of constructing steps on this slope and the initial response was encouraging. To be continued.) In the meantime, if there is sufficient interest I will organize a shuttle trip meeting at 9:00 at the Pennyfield Lock takeout and putting in at Riley’s Lock. Please contact me at macinmd1@gmail.com or 443 542 8779 if you wish to join the trip and, if so, which alternative you prefer.

PFDs are required for all. Helmets are required for kayakers using spray skirts and highly recommended for all others. Airbags are strongly encouraged for boats without other means of flotation. If you need safety equipment, please advise the trip coordinator.
