Highlights of June 12 Board Meeting

The CCA Board met virtually June 12. The full minutes have been posted on the CCA website (Members Only > Documents > Meeting Minutes). Here are some highlights, from minutes taken by Secretary Jen Sass:

Attending: David (Cotton) Cottingham (Chair), Jen Sass (Secretary), Lynn Miller, Alan Gale, Dean Hawes, Rolo Arrieta, Barb Brown, Ginny DeSeau, Kathleen Sengstock, Laura Kurup, Hildy Ferraiolo, Gary Quam, Ginny Quam, Peter Ryan

Leadership and Nominating Committee

Cotton has been Chair for five years and will be rotating off. Hildy will chair the Nominating Committee. She will start later this summer, as per the process in the bylaws.

Winter Holiday Party

The Clara Barton Recreation Center is not available on our traditional winter holiday date, which would be Friday Dec. 5 this year. As proposed by Ed Gertler and Cotton, the Board agreed to hold the party on Saturday, Dec. 6.

Pool Sessions

Tom Hackman reported that this past winter a total of 130 people came out over nine pool Sessions. (There were 12 scheduled, but three were canceled due to bad weather.) Attendance averaged just over 14 paddlers per session. We also had three Soul Trak sessions, and Rolo and Tom did a few safety sessions in the pool as well. Tom has graciously offered to coordinate winter pool sessions for next year. We collected $2670 in registration fees, of which $410 goes to ACA for insurance and $2,925 for the pool rental ($325/session), for a net loss of $665. The Board suggested that to try to break even next year, we could increase the charge per session by about $5, up from the current $20. ACTION: This will be discussed and considered in the fall when we know more about our contract with the aquatic center.

Treasurer's Report – Marilyn, through Cotton

As of June 10th, CCA's year-to-date income is $15,614.34. Our expenses were $17,656.45. Our net operating income is ($2,042), due largely to two $500 classes scheduled for later this summer for which we don't have registration income yet and the shortfall for pool rolling.

Downriver Race Report – Risa, through Lynn and Laura

Once again, the annual Downriver Race was fantastic and went off smoothly and successfully. Laura ran the trial WebScorer timing app successfully. The timing team recommends that the CCA move to WebScorer for the 2026 Downriver Race. We may run paper timing as backup. The Board expressed its gratitude to Risa, the race volunteers, and the timing team for doing so much work to make our 70th annual Race a success, noting that the timing advances were a much-welcomed game-changer.

Safety Report – Rolo

Rolo is requesting that CCA pay the ACA-required Safety Education & Instruction Council (SEIC) instructor fees of $30/year for all CCA members who are ACA-certified instructors in good standing and teach at least two CCA safety or instruction classes. Rolo guesstimates that it would be fewer than a dozen people. Rolo could track the completion of the requirements as stated above (as Gary Q. does for reimbursing trip leaders for training). The Board was in general agreement. ACTION: Rolo will draft a resolution.

Steering Committee

Alan Gale has asked to rotate off the Steering Committee, as he is now based in Maine. The Board will miss Alan very much and will hold him to his promise to stay in touch.

Next meeting: Wednesday Aug. 27.
