GW Canal @ 2.79' - 1 August 2021
Author Last Post

Six paddlers (Alf C, Ginny Q, Gordy L, John S, Phoebe H & Wayne McD) made a trouble-free run down the George Washington Canal under cloudy skies. Phoebe Hamill’s name may be familiar to some CCA old-timers – she returned to the river after a ten-year absence. The canal was a bit scrapey at 2.79’ (2310 cfs), the lowest it’s been this year – we definitely need a friendly hurricane to make its way north. Upstream of 30 Eddy Rapid we encountered a stand-up canoe who had poled(!) up from Pennyfield, including attaining through the rapid – impressive! Paddling back across the Po we observed two bald eagles on “Steve’s tree” on the island facing Sandy Beach. Arriving at Blockhouse Point, we were greeted by two of our walking wounded – Gary Q and Peter R. They begged off helping carry the boats up the embankment with the feeble excuse of back surgery recovery. As we approached Violette’s Lock, the heavens opened up a bit for some much-needed rain.
