Geo Washington Canal Loop @ 3.37' - Sun 22 Aug...
Author Last Post

13 of us ran an uneventful CWC Loop under the leadership of Jackie Hoglund, encountering three large blown down trees across the waterway, but each with newly cut-through pathways. Weather was warm (80) and hazy. We were 12: Wayne, Hendrik, Ginny Quam, Toni Bickart, Cotton, Gordy, Kathleen S, Alf, and back on the river: Peter Ryan and Glen Douglass, with new paddlers: David ~~ and Diane Hobbs in large rec kayaks, Five of us surfed at the eponymous rapid, while Gordy, Toni, Kathleen, and Alf attained the tricky little rapid on the left fork. Below that - the first blow-down. It rained briefly as we were just above 30-Eddy Rapid. No flips or other close calls.

Crossing the Po to the C&O Canal, we found it full, with erosion at MP 21 advancing into the towpath, Within sight of Violettes Lock two trees were blown down across the Canal, with passageways sawn around the far end (top crown) of the trees. The NHP had immediately cleared the towpath; boaters' needs were still to be addressed.
