Staircase and Heron Rookery - 4.1' - 4/18/24
Author Last Post

At the start of our run we (Mark, Sheila, Ken, Chris and Hugh in K1s) spotted a bald eagle on river right as we drifted down the flat water section of the Shenandoah. At the end of our run we saw dozens of heron nests on an island below the 340 bridge. Herons were sitting on many of the nests and there were many others in-flight over the sycamores. In between we enjoyed ourselves surfing and playing our way down the Doah and into the Potomac, which was running at healthy 18,000 cfs (Point of Rocks gauge). A large emergency training exercise was underway on the Potomac as we headed to the Weverton take out, involving helicopters, rescue boats, and land personnel. A K9 team appeared just as we took our boats out at the confluence of Israel Creek! Mission accomplished, we lugged our boats through the woods and back to the Weverton parking area, where we chatted with some Appalachian Trail through hikers.
