Sunday Paddle - George Washington Canal
The Sunday paddle is tentatively scheduled for the Riley's Lock/George Washington (GW)/Potowmack Canal/Pennyfield run. However, a shutdown of the federal government on Sunday appears likely and this may affect our ability to access the NPS facility at Pennyfield. We will hopefully meet at the Pennyfield Lock parking lot at 9:30 a.m. to set shuttle since the C&O Canal is still de-watered. We will then convoy up to Riley's Lock.
The weather is projected to be sunny with a high in the upper 70s, ideal paddling weather. The Little Falls gauge is forecast at 3.0', a moderate level for this section of river.
Please let the trip coordinator know if you are coming. This week's trip coordinator is John Snitzer at navajuela@comcast.net. Advising the trip coordinator in advance is particularly important this week in view of the uncertain schedule.
For those unfamiliar with this run, we will depart Riley’s Lock and cross the Potomac on a mile of flatwater then turn into the remains of the GW/Potowmack canal. We will paddle down this mile-long Class II stretch until we rejoin the main channel of the Potomac and head down the final mile of mostly flatwater to Pennyfield. Total trip time 3.5-4 hours.
This is a Class II trip. Boat control in moving water is essential. Life jackets are required. Helmets are strongly encouraged (mandatory for kayakers). Kayakers should have a skirt. Boats should have flotation. Please reach out to the Trip Coordinator with any questions.
